John Lysen Teaches Girl Scouts About Sweden

On Monday, 12 February 2007, John Lysen gave a presentation about Sweden to Girl Scout Troop 39 of North Pole, Alaska.
The Girl Scouts have adopted Sweden as their country to learn about this year.
John brought many Swedish items that he has collected. The presentation included a brief history of Sweden, Swedish and scandinavian flags, Everyman's Law, Swedish krona, Dala horses, Forest Finns, Finnish farms, and Lekvattnet.

The girls loved hearing John's story of finding his family history and cousins in Sweden.
The highlight was seeing www.lekvattnet.nu projected from the computer onto a big screen.
The girls liked seeing the time clock of North Pole and Lekvattnet side by side.
They were fascinated by the Swedish language on the website, then seeing it change to English at the click of a mouse.
They said Benny the webmaster is a magician.

With the help of troop leader Nancy Dreydopple, and assistant troop leader Jamie Fine, who has Swedish roots herself, the scouts made Swedish pancakes.
The girls enjoyed a feast of the pancakes, lingonberries, Wäsa bread, and cheese, while watching a slideshow of John's photos from the Lekvattnet website.

Thanks to John, this was the scouts' first taste of lingonberries, which they declared were even better than Alaskan blueberries!
The Girl Scouts wish to say hello to all the people of Lekvattnet, who are lucky to live in such a beautiful place, where lingonberries grow.
